The irresponsibility of recommending a drug

QUICK READ: Hydroxychloroquine does NOT prevent the Coronavirus and could be fatal to people who take it. There currently exists no definitive proof that the drug, often prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and other autoimmune diseases, will aid patients fighting COVID-19. Many public health experts have been baffled by Trump’s stumping for hydroxychloroquine but baffled isn’t enough they need to call out his towering ignorance.

Politico quoted an unnamed senior official at the Department of Health and Human Services, who referred to Trump’s obsession as “mindshare, time and energy being soaked up by a potential wild-goose chase,” adding that “we have no idea if this works, and the evidence suggests it doesn’t.”

Hydroxychloroquine can lead to heart arrhythmia and are serious problems as it suppresses the immune system. It MAY help people in the ICU on ventilators whose immune system is causing them to down in their own fluids but for the general public recommending the dug is beyond irresponsible.

President Donald Trump on Sunday did not let Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, weigh in on what he thought about using hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug, on patients with COVID-19. The US government had stockpiled 29 million hydroxychloroquine pills for treatment, despite having only anecdotal evidence so far of their effect on COVID-19. The drug is usually used for malaria or lupus, but it is among several drugs being researched as treatments for the novel coronavirus.

So this is what happens when an idiot tries to override science. It endangers people and could cause death. It’s interesting to note that Republicans, in general, are less likely to believe in science and in the dangers of the Coronavirus according to Pew Internet. God help us!
