Real disruption in healthcare

KEY TAKEAWAY: There are 540 billionaires in the United States, with a combined net worth of $2.399 trillion, according to our 2016 list of the world’s richest people. That’s more billionaires and more combined net worth than any other nation in the world.  What if half of them decided to donate $10 million to a program to bring free healthcare to those who can’t afford it in the US?

Almost 20 percent of Americans, or more than 40 million adults, can’t afford or access needed health care, according to a U.S. Government report .  Researchers at the University of North Carolina report more than one-quarter of cancer patients can’t afford to pay for their treatment, and nearly one in five can’t afford their prescriptions, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

In other words, there are a lot of people who need help with healthcare costs.

While the media and politicians have been attacking big pharma for the cost of drugs pharma, via their propaganda arm PhRMA, has been fighting back, accusing others of taking a piece of the pie for healthcare costs.  However, all this finger pointing has done little to help patients who need healthcare.  It’s especially bad for people living in the deep South where there are high levels of poverty.

Considering that all 540 billionaires just got a massive raise via the new tax bill, why can’t they put some money together and find a way to bring quality healthcare to the people who need it most?  Bill & Melinda Gates have been using their fortune to help people, but others like Mr Buffet and Elon Musk aren’t doing a damn thing beyond some token showings.

The bottom line is that we can’t count on the government to help these people and thus bring down the costs of healthcare; we have to do it ourselves.  If you want to see real disruption in healthcare ask billionaires to come together and do what’s right for the good of us all.
