Pharma marketing salaries climb over 12%

The force behind a great company has to be more than the pride of one person; it has to be the pride of thousands. You can’t make people work for money alone – you starve their souls when you try it, and you can starve a company to death the same way.

Pharma marketing people are doing OK when it comes to making money, but in the process they are losing their souls?

A funny thing happens when you pay people really well, they get addicted to the great salary and do anything to keep their jobs, even if it means agreeing with to do thing they know are not in the patient’s best interests.

Of course, there are some cities that warrant, high salaries.  Boston and San Francisco are prime examples. Rents in Boston can cost more than a mortgage and housing in San Francisco is only a dream for many employees.   But, salary alone is not a good enough reason to work in pharma or biotech.

To me, the greatest reward of working in the industry is knowing that I am helping patients and caregivers make better health care choices. When you sit in a focus group and listen to cancer survivors talking about the life saving medications they received it makes me feel that despite all the negative publicity pharma companies are helping to extend lives.

However, there is a bad side as well.  These are the corporate climbers who will do anything to stay on the corporate ladder. To them a title and salary are more important than jeopardizing their careers to speak for patients who often don’t have a voice.  There are a lot of them out there, believe me I know.

They are recruited based upon whether they will fit in rather than the passion they have for our industry.  Too often employees who challenge the establishment and the status quo are seen as “non team players” and told to fit in or get out.  That has to change and it has to change NOW.
